The discussion

Topic C     In the novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns, Khaled Hosseini contributes to the meaning by showing how past events can affect a person future later on down their journey. He use character Mariam to portray the idea that one’s value as a character would eventually settle in as the way they view their own life.
While demonstrating the likes of men having the overall authority “a Man‘s accusing finger always finds a woman” (pg.7) Mariam is having different interpretations on the idea of men. From the beginning she is pointed out towards past events that have happened between her father and mother and realizing that the betrayal that her father shows against her helps define the overall look that she see’s with men, no matter what they are always the ones who are right. Feeling as though she is worthless, “Now you know what you‘ve given me in this relationship, bad food and nothing else” (pg.104). Given the thought that you have fixed and did everything right and for someone to not except it, Mariam feels as though she is nothing and she would never become anything more, only settling for what little affection she received from Rasheed. Reflecting back towards her past Maraim remembers her mother words “I’m all you have in this world, Mariam, and when I’m gone you’ll have nothing. You’ll have nothing. You are nothing” (pg.27) Accepting her lifestyle as it is, Mariam would never escape the feeling of glut, betrayal, and no wrong or right direction of why things turned out the way they did
Author Hosseini shows that Mariam actions only represented from the hearing of what others told her and made her do. Not ever having the chance to actually grow, she was forced into certain things that she wasn’t prepared for. This carried on into her adult hood giving her such a cold heart and making her believe that is what she will always be.

Topic A

In some events of the novel, A thousand Splendid Suns you can see the separation of both female and male through the language and use of imagery that author Khaled Hosseini demonstrates on how both are treated differently, creating a strong view towards the use of domestic abuse verbally and physically.
Having males be the authority figure amongst all things, this particular situation Hosseini uses both characters Lalil and Rasheed to show the typical Afghanistan marriage of a young girl. With his words “I married a pari, and now I’m saddled with a hag. You’re turning into Mariam” (pg.304) a woman’s thoughts and insecurities can be brought down very easily and with the feeling that Lalil has lost everything that she had cared for, Lalil is token back by her husband words and begin to feel as though she is worthless. Comparing her to “Mariam” she thinks of herself as someone who is losing her looks and thinking that no one would care for her as they do with Mariam. From the view of his face  “He turned around, all snarling teeth and blazing eyes”(pg.347 )Hosseini uses the blazing effect of Rasheed eyes as a reaction towards Lalil pouring something on him  to let the reader know that a shift in the attitude amongst the characters are about to change and something is about to happen.  She looks at him not knowing what to think “Morphing into something else, then fading, giving way to blackness..Lalil could make out the crack again, and it was the same old dull smile” (pg. 351) using Lalil reaction towards Rasheed body just sitting there she reflecting back towards all the pain Lalil has went through she doesn’t know what to think but deep inside there is a sign of relief that it’s over, letting out all the darkness that was ever there and being happy again.
Author Hosseini goes through by demonstrating that different actions of abuse leading  to bad endings and with the help from using literary elements such as imagery Hosseini creates personal image and lasting view of what goes on leaving the reader with the a lasting impression of this strong social issue that going on in Afghanistan.
